Ama Dwimoh began her legal career in the New York State criminal justice system in 1988, when she was assigned as a prosecutor for the Sex Crimes/Special Victims Bureau. Some of the other titles that she has held over the years include Senior Felony Trial Attorney and Deputy Bureau Chief in the Trial Division. She held the former position with the Homicide Bureau, as well. In 1997, she was appointed by the DA to create the Crimes Against Children Bureau, the first bureau in New York State dedicated to prosecuting child abusers and protecting victims under 11 years old. In particular, this bureau targets cases involving child death and physical or sexual abuse. Ama Dwimoh’s extensive experience as a trial lawyer allowed her to prosecute many of these cases personally. She also ran the daily affairs of the bureau and conducted legal research and victim interviews.
Ama Dwimoh belongs to a number of professional organizations and supports their work. These include the District Attorneys Association of the State of New York, the New York City Bar Association, the Interagency Operating Committee of the Brooklyn Child Advocacy Center, and the Mayor’s Criminal Justice Task Force on Child Abuse. She also started the Baby Safe Haven Program, an initiative whose focus was to save the lives of newborns in situations where they were abandoned on the streets of Brooklyn. As the child was unharmed and left in a designated safe place, there would be no criminal prosecution. These abandoned children would then be safe and in the care of the Administration for Children Services—the social services for children in New York. Ama Dwimoh has worked extensively with local leaders, providing information about child abuse and discussing solutions offered by community members that could be implemented in their areas.
Ama Dwimoh’s educational background is in politics and law. She originally received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Barnard College of Columbia University and proceeded to earn a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University. In her spare time, Ama Dwimoh is very active in her church and community. She enjoys the outdoors and traveling.
