Overseeing a budget of $188 million, Dr. Carole Hankin acts as Superintendent of the Syosset Central School District in New York. The award-winning district includes 6,600 students in 10 schools and 1,500 employees. Since taking the helm in 1990, Dr. Carole Hankin has spearheaded elementary enrichment and world foreign language programs, partnerships with regional arts and science institutions, and a peer leadership program. She also created the Superintendent’s Student Cabinet and implemented a curriculum correlated to the latest science on early brain development.
For her efforts, Dr. Carole Hankin received an appointment to the National Council of Civic Leaders by Senator Hillary Clinton and an invitation to participate in the White House Conference on Teenagers: Raising Responsible and Resourceful Youth. Named a Distinguished Administrator by the New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers, Inc., Dr. Carole Hankin has also earned many other accolades, such as the Ellen Swallow Richards Award from the Long Island Family and Consumer Science Professionals Association. In recognition of her achievements, both individually and in her leadership role, the New York State Legislature honored Dr. Hankin with a Joint Resolution.
Several media outlets have sought Dr. Carole Hankin’s expertise, including Fox News, WOR News Talk Radio 710, WICO-FM/AM, CNN Radio, and WCBS Newsradio 880. She has spoken on bullying, teaching etiquette in schools, suspensions, zero tolerance, school violence, and other significant topics. Dr. Hankin also shares her knowledge and experience in a monthly newspaper column for Education Update, found online at www.educationupdate.com. Her writing focuses on such subjects as peer influences and learning opportunities outside of school. In other writing, Dr. Carole Hankin has contributed articles to the American School Board Journal, and additional publications have featured stories on her and on the Syosset Central School District.
A graduate of Sarah Lawrence College and then Columbia University, where she received two Master’s degrees and a PhD, Dr. Carole Hankin belongs to the American Association of School Administrators and the New York State Council of School Superintendents. She sits on the Women’s Committee of the Central Park Conservancy and the Board of Trustees of New York State’s Museum of Mathematics, the only institution of its kind in the United States. Outside of her professional duties and community service, Dr. Carole Hankin pursues an interest in technology and particularly enjoys reading the works of Ayn Rand.
