Newcastle is a city located in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia. It is the second largest city in the state and the seventh largest in the country.The metropolitan area of Greater Newcastle includes the Local Government Areas of City of Newcastle, City of Lake Macquarie, City of Cessnock, City of Maitland and Port Stephens Council.As of 30 June 2009, the metropolitan area had an estimated population of 540,796.The city is located approximately 162 kilometres north of Sydney, at the mouth of the Hunter River. Famous for its coal, Newcastle is presently the largest coal exporting harbour in the world, exporting over 97 Mt of coal in 2009–10 with plans to expand annual capacity to 180 Mt by 2013.
